Letcher County Culture Hub Celebration

Whitesburg, Kentucky — On Saturday, April 21st, the Letcher County Culture Hub will celebrate the work it has been doing for the last two years. The event, which has been in the planning for months, will include music, food, arts, crafts, a play reading, a free community dinner and a square-dance. The event begins promptly at 1pm at the Cowan Community Center, 81 Sturgill Branch, Whitesburg, KY.

The Letcher County Culture Hub is a growing network of community-led organizations in Letcher County, who work together to build a culture and economy where we own what we make. The Culture Hub's twenty plus current members include community centers, local businesses and business associations, artist and artisan organizations, volunteer fire departments, government and educational organizations, and nonprofit corporations, convened and facilitated by community organizers at Appalshop. Culture Hub partners have worked together to start businesses, revive cultural events, influence public policy and bring more and more citizens of Letcher County into the process of imagining and building our future together.

There will be a Whitesburg/ Letcher County Farmers Market preview as certain early crops are coming in. Booths include Carcassonne Community Center, Campbell’s Branch Community Center, local volunteer fire departments, Revive Our Lower Letcher (ROLL), Hemp Hill Community Center/Black Sheep Bakery and Homes Inc. to name a few.

A reading of the Roadside Theater play, “The Future of Letcher County,” based on interviews from folks across the county followed by a community discussion will be begin at 2pm. The booths are open from 1pm until 5pm. At 5pm a line singing hosted by and located at Big Cowan Old Regular Baptist Church.

There will be art exhibits from EpiCentre Arts and Humans of Central Appalachia. The music lineup includes Lee Sexton, Ron Short, Kevin Howard, Nate Polly, Bak2Bak, Debbie Tuggle Pendley and Mitchella Phipps.

Join us at the library as we host a "Harry Potter" inspired Yule Ball! Wear your favorite fancy outfit, your wizarding dress robes, or even your formal wear, and join us for dancing, wizarding world inspired food, and lots of fun! Tickets are required; you can pick them up at the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library in downtown Whitesburg.
